In the middle of February I did the “Lighthouse to Lighthouse Extreme Mountain Bike Race” organised by the Gansbaai Lions.

It takes place over two days of 90 an 100km respectively. The first day is from Gansbaai Lighthouse to Agulhas Lighthouse and the second is the reverse, with a detour through the historic town of Elim.

I had wanted to challenge myself with something that I was not 100% sure I could do and this was the perfect event. The longest MTB race that I had done previously was 45km so this was a bit of a shock to the system. I definitely suffered on the second day where we basically rode straight into the teeth of the wind for 100km.

Nevertheless, I completed the race and am so glad that I did it. I will be back next year without a doubt, hopefully with a bit more training in my legs and some buddies to ride with.

The video was filmed 100% on my GoPro and was an experiment for me in editing video and trying to record interesting footage while racing.

The ground fog over the last two days has been great, it changes the environment completely. The Art Deconess of the Caversham Centre made it look like it came from another time altogether.

This weekend was the Greyton MTB race. We stayed at Voorhoede camp site just outside Caledon since there was nowhere to camp in Greyton (the one only camp site was flooded – with water, not people).

Voorhoede was fantastic and we will definitely be back, although hopefully the weather will be better next time.

The picture is a long exposure taken while Alys and Richard set up the tents (lit by the car’s headlights) and I got the fire started.

The sunset last night was dramatic, due to the gathering storm clouds (the same clouds which made my ride to work something of a cycle-swim duathlon this morning).

I decided to get up early to ride this morning, but didn’t manage to drag myself out bed quite early enough to get any real distance in, so I took my camera instead and raced the light up the mountain. The title is what this guy said to me as he whizzed past and i think it sums it up perfectly.

I’m very chuffed to say my photo of folks descending Lion’s Head at night was chosen as the winning photo for the most recent edition of Mango’s in-flight magazine, ”Juiced”.

What, if anything, I actually win has yet to be determined, but the footer does promise that I ”could” win ”spectacular prizes”, so here’s hoping.
