I have a big shiny chef's knife, one of those ones where the whole thing is formed out of one big lump of metal, and it always seems so ideal for a slasher movie, but never more than when I have been murdering a Beetroot. My beautiful Alys and I went out to one of our favourite restaurants recently, the Buena Vista Social Cafe in greenpoint. The atmosphere is always awesome and the food is even better. I have been trying to find a way to capture images in really low light, so this was the perfect opportunity. I find that the majority of the noise in my high ISO images is chromatic, so B&W can really improve the situation. This was taken at F2.2, 1/30 at ISO 1600 and I think it came out pretty nicely.

This weekend we visited the Earth Fair Market in Retreat (hidden in a warehouse behind Hi-Fi Corp). I have to admit that I’m probably not the greenest person around, but I sure love those hippies’ food! It always feels good to eat something that feels like it just came out of the ground (or in the case of the incredible Prego Roll I bought, just came out of the cow).

There are all sorts of other offerings too, including fresh vegetables, herbs (I bought a sickly looking corriander plant, we will see how that turns out, my thumbs aren’t terribly green either), cheese, biltong (best chilli beef biltong ever!), local beer and even these funky looking Buna Shimeji mushrooms (apparently they are full of nutty flavours, but at R25 a punnet I think I’ll stick to my Pick ’n Pay buttons).

The market is open from 9am – 2pm on Saturdays and 3pm – 8pm on Wednesdays (when it is apparently more about eating and drinking than buying fresh produce).
