This one was taken with with some borrowed extension tubes on my 400D.
As usual, I used the GIMP to convert to B&W, followed by a light seasoning of Gaussian noise.
One of the common tricks to getting realistic noise is to lay it on a bit thicker in the shadow areas. Something that I also find helpful is to use multiple layers of noise, with different scaling factors applied.
